Houston, TX | Feb. 22, 2014: It was a somber night for the city of Houston after the death of a veteran firefighter. Capt. Dwight Bazile died Saturday evening after he collapsed at a fire scene earlier in the week. First responders held a moving processional as Bazile’s body was moved from the hospital. Gianna Caserta reports.
Fire officials said while responding to reports of people trapped inside, Capt. Dwight W. Bazile began experiencing a medical emergency. He was able to walk out of the burning building under his own power, but collapsed outside shortly after.
Bazile, a 37-year veteran, was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he had been “fighting for his life,” HFD officials said this week.
Bazile died from his injuries at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, the Houston Fire Department said.
“I am saddened that the city of Houston has lost another one of its own,” Houston Mayor Annise Parker said in a statement. “This has happened too many times before. It hurts deeply and it never gets easy. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Fire Captain Dwight Bazile and the entire Houston Fire Department as they grieve this loss.
“I want to thank the doctors and other medical personnel at Memorial Hermann who fought hard over the last two days to give Captain Bazile the best medical care possible.”
HFD said Bazile is survived by his wife Pamela Bazile, son Dwight Bazile II, and mother Charlotte Felder.
“We ask that you keep the family, of Captain Bazile, in your thoughts and prayers,” the Houston Fire Department said in a statement Saturday night.
Bazile joined the Houston Fire Department in October 1977 and served most of his career from Fire Station 46 in southeast Houston. HFD said he was promoted to captain in 2008.
